Bye Bye Bob

09/14/06
You will all be glad to hear that "Bob" the skink is back outside where he belongs. We're fairly certain it was a male.

It's actually kinda funny how we were able to get it. I saw it in the kitchen earlier this afternoon. As you all know, we have a sky-light in the kitchen that allows a ton of sunlight in... and he'd come out to bask in the sunshine, and presumably to get water. He must have been pretty thirsty considering he's been in here over a week, if our theory is correct on when he came in originally.

As soon as I saw him in the kitchen, I yelled for Dan to come out of the office. Which, of course, brought Daniel and Crisper running out as well... and when Crisper rounded the corner from the hallway into the kitchen, the skink ran back under the fridge.

Thinking we wouldn't be seeing it for another week, it didn't occur to me what was wrong when I heard Crisper screaming a bit later. He was in a panic. You can always tell the difference in the cries. This was definitely a scared, freaking-out sorta cry. He was in the hallway where, apparently, the skink was as well. I don't know who scared whom worse... but the poor skink ran behind my ficus tree in the dining room. Poor terrified Crisper ran to me shaking from head to toe with real tears streaming down his little face yelling, "Mama, get me, quick!" When I asked him what was wrong he said it was a "snake! snake!"

Anyway to make a dramatic story short, Dan brought in a box from the garage and gently swept the skink into the box with a broom. Then we put it outside and hopefully he's going to make a full recovery from being stuck inside so long.

To answer the question I know you're all wondering... YES... I am glad Dan was home to get it for me. Although, I have to admit, I would have gotten him on my own and put him out if Dan hadn't been here. I didn't want him to die.

Honestly, I kinda felt sorry for the little guy. I actually wished I could speak lizard... so I could direct him to the door and hold it open for him to make a graceful exit. Anyway, he's gone. Now I can get up in the middle of the night and get that antacid next time I need it. I am a bit sad though, we no longer have anything to explain away the strange noises we hear late at night. Oh well. Guess it's time to get another cat! :)
